2013年発表。イギリスの作家リー・チャイルドのハードボイルド小説。主人公の名前にちなんだジャック・リーチャー・シリーズとして、30冊弱の作品が出版されています。本書は18作目に当たります。
シリーズは、米退役軍人のジャックが、米大陸を放浪する先々で不正や悪に遭遇。不屈の精神と優れた格闘能力で悪に立ち向かうーといった内容で描かれています。
個人的な感想として、アメリカの出版業界は、作者の文体を尊重する文化があるのか、文章ひとつひとつが長かったり、唐突に何の説明もなく固有名詞が出てきたりと、読みにくい作品があると感じています。
そんな中で、リー・チャイルドの小説は、英文が簡潔で読みやすいのが特徴。
第一作から通さずに、途中の一冊を読んでも、主人公の人物像や物語の背景が分かるように工夫されています。
気軽な気持ちで一冊、手に取ってみることをお勧めします。
私が「Never Go Back」を読んだ時のTOEICスコアは880点。理解できない細かな個所はありましたが、読み飛ばしても十分にストーリーを楽しめました。
「Never Go Back」は2016年、トム・クルーズ主演で映画化されているので、ストーリーがわからなければ答え合わせのつもりで、映画も見ましょう。
2012年にはシリーズ９作目の「Outlaw」も映画化されています。
ちなみに、欧米のハードボイルド作家といえば、レイモンド・チャンドラー（1959年没）が有名で、名作も多いのですが、内容に古さを感じることがあるかもしれません。
ジャック・リーチャー・シリーズは第一作目が1997年出版の「Killing Floor」と比較的、新しいです。特に近年の作品はパソコンや携帯電話が出てくる、時代に即したストーリーで楽しめます。
あらすじ；米陸軍憲兵捜査官（少佐）だったジャック・リーチャーは、かつて自身が指揮していた第110憲兵隊の基地を目指す。現在の女性指揮官スーザン・ターナーと会う約束だったが、基地に到着すると不在で、国家反逆の疑いで拘束されているという。ジャックは不審に思い、状況を調べ始めるが、見知らぬ男らの待ち伏せに合いー。
2022年には、アマゾン・オリジナルのドラマ「ジャック・リーチャー ～正義のアウトロー～」シリーズが始まりました。プライムビデオで見放題になっています。

2020年発表。リー・チャイルドによる小説「ジャック・リーチャー」シリーズの25作目です。本書は初めて、14歳離れた弟のアンドリュー・リーと共著という形で書かれました。
リー・チャイルド（1954年生まれ）が、65歳を過ぎ、引退を視野に入れて共著としました。アンドリューもスリラー作家ですが、リーほどの成功した実績はありません。
ともあれ、本書でも元米陸軍憲兵捜査官のジャックが、持ち前の頭脳と肉体を武器に、手段を選ばず悪を正します。
私はTOEIC880点で挑戦。多少、難しい単語がありましたが、無理なく多読できるレベルにだと感じました。
私はシリーズ作品なので、往年の名著のように深く文章を吟味せず、気軽に読んでしまいます。
リー・チャイルドの英語は、やはり文体が分かりやすく読みやすいです。
あらすじ；テネシー州のある町に到着したジャックは、ある一人の男が４人に襲われているのを見かけ、助け出す。男は町のITマネジャーとして、あらゆるデータを取り扱っていたが、サイバーアタックにより町全体の通信機能がまひする事態を引き起こしたとして、解雇されたところだった。男は真面目なオタクといった性格で、リーチャーは話を聞くうちに正直な人間だと悟る。しかし、警察は男が受けた暴行未遂の捜査に消極的で、さらなる襲撃も起こりー。

アメリカの作家ジョン・グリシャムが1991年、第二作目の小説として発表しました。
ジョン・グリシャムは、法律・法廷を題材にしたサスペンスに強い小説家です。弁護士資格を持ち、実務経験もあるため、ストーリーの細部に至るまでリアリティがあり、読み応えがあります。
90年代には、「評決のとき」「依頼人」などが映画化され、大ヒットしました。
2010年代のハリウッド映画は、日本の漫画を焼き映したような、ヒーローものの勧善懲悪的な単純な作品が多いと思います。
ジョン・グリシャムのような、重厚かつ丁寧に仕上げられた作品は、今も色褪せません。法律事務所もそのひとつで、もちろん映画化されていますが、原作は抜群に面白いのでおすすめです。
私はTOEIC645点を取得し、フィリピンで半年間、語学留学した後に読みました。
児童向けの洋書を十数冊読んで、ペーパーバックの多読に挑戦し始めた頃です。
語彙力や文法知識が足りないせいで、理解度は６〜７割でしたが、ストーリーは十分追うことが可能。本来は少しずつでも単語を調べるべきだったのですが、面白くてページをめくる手が止まらず一気に読みました。
あらすじ；ハーバード大で優秀な成績を収めて卒業した主人公が、アメリカ有数の弁護士事務所に入社。成功への階段を登りつつあるかに見えたが、巨悪の陰謀に巻き込まれていく。FBI捜査官が秘密裏に接触しー。
まるでスパイのような、FBIのスリリングな捜査も描かれており、必見です。

邦訳は「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」。村上春樹が2006年、新訳を出したことでも話題になりました。
私はTOEIC645点の時に読みましたが、少し力不足でした。
特別に伏線や、オチが織り込まれているわけではないので、何かを得たわけではない、ふわっとした読後感になることもあり、読者に何を伝えたかったのかが分かりませんでした。
ぼんやりとストーリーは追えるのですが、語彙力不足で小説を楽しむまでには至りませんでした。
英語自体はそれほど難解ではないと思いますが、TOEIC800点ほどは必要でしょう。
邦訳版には、独特の味わいがあるので、読み比べれば作品を楽しめます。
主人公に年齢の近い、若者の方が内容に共感できるはずです。感性が若いうちに、ぜひ挑戦してほしい本になります。
あらすじ；16歳のホールデンは、成績不審により名門校から退行処分を言い渡される。ホールデンは両親に通知が届く前に、寮を出ることにし、実家には戻らず、ニューヨークに向かう。ホテルに泊まり、売春婦をあっせんしてきた男に金を巻き上げられた後、酒を飲んで酔っ払ったり、女の子とダンスに興じたりするが、若者特有の、何かに満たされない気持ちは解消されないー。
