オックスフォード大学出版は、古典、現代フィクション、戯曲など260冊のグレイデット・リーダーズを用意しています。
レベルは「starter（英検３〜５級相当）」から「stage 6（同１級相当）」までの７段階です。
100年以上前に出版された古典の原著は、古めかしい英語表現が多くて読みにくいのですが、グレイデット・リーダーズでは現代風に書き直されているので、すらすら読めます。
一般図書と比較して、価格の割に文章量が少ないのが欠点ですが、多読を始めるのには良いでしょう。まずは最寄りの図書館で貸出していないか、確認すると良いです。

The Wizard of Oz（オズの魔法使い）
1900年初版出版。アメリカの児童文学作家ライマン・フランク・ボームの作品で、世界中で愛されています。ミュージカルや映画にもなっているので、知らない人はいないでしょう。
アメリカ議会図書館が「アメリカで最も優れ、最も愛されているおとぎ話」と評価しています。
カンザス州に住むドロシーはある日、家ごと竜巻に巻き込まれ、オズ王国に飛ばされてしまう。家は東が悪い魔女を圧死させたことで、ドロシーは不思議な力を持つ銀の靴を受け取る。ドロシーはカンザスに帰るため、エメラルドの都に住むオズの魔法使いに会いに行く旅に出るがー。

Les Miserables（ああ無常）
1862年発行。フランスの作家ヴィクトル・ユーゴーの作品です。
1815年、ジャン・バルジャンは１本のパンを盗んだ罪で投獄され、18年の刑期を終えて出所した。どこへいっても冷遇されたが、ある教会の司教だけは温かく迎え入れてくれた。ジャンは銀食器を盗んでしまい憲兵に捕まるが、司教は「彼に与えたものだ」と主張しー。
1789年にフランス革命が起こり、国王ルイ16世が処刑され、民衆は王族や貴族らの圧政を打破します。
オーストリアなど周辺国は革命がフランス国外に広がり、自国の王政が打倒されることを警戒し、攻撃します。その危機的状況を打開したのが、フランス陸軍士官だったナポレオンで一気に戦線を打開、ヨーロッパの大半を支配下に起きます。
しかし、ナポレオンは1812年のロシア遠征で大敗し、フランスには再び混乱が訪れる。
ユゴーは、当時の時代考証を交えて作品を描いています。

Robinson Crusoe（ロビンソン・クルーソー）
1719年出版。イギリスの小説家ダニエル・デフォーの作品です。好評だったため、第３部まで続編が執筆されました。
1665年、ロビンソン・クルーソーは南アメリカの孤島に難破する。15年間にわたり一人で生き抜いていたが突如、島内には、ほかに人間がいることに気づく。果たしてその存在は友好的なのか、敵なのかー。
15〜17世紀は、ヨーロッパ人が西に航路を求めて、アメリカ大陸の存在に気づくなど、盛んに海に出た時代でした。実際に難破して無人島で暮らした事例もあります。
ロビンソン・クルーソーは、スコットランドの航海長アレキサンダー・セルカークの漂流記などがモデルになったとされています。
